MBU celebrates 48th commencement

By the Numbers

Total Degrees: 747

Doctor of Education: 12

Educational Specialist: 30

Graduate degrees and certificates: 231

Undergraduate degrees: 474

More than 700 degrees were conferred to the class of 2020 at Missouri Baptist University’s 47th graduation ceremony, first virtually on April 28, then in person on Nov. 13 at the Family Arena in St. Charles, Missouri.

MBU followed CDC guidelines, including mandatory social distancing, mask use, screenings and reduction of high-touch surfaces. While the ceremony was a little different than years past, the traditions and honor of the MBU commencement ceremony was reserved, including bagpipe players opening and concluding the ceremony.

The evening began with gratitude to the graduates’ families and faculty by President Keith Ross along with praise to MBU students who have proved their mettle this year.

“On the road from perseverance to hope, there are always unforeseen twists and turns, valleys and mountains,” charged Dr. Ross.

“Undoubtedly, much has been asked of you, Class of 2020. You have weathered the storm well. When you reflect on these challenging days, both now and in the future, I hope that you remember this to be a time when you chose to trust the Lord more fully and to love your family and neighbors more deeply.” Said President Ross.

This year’s commencement speaker was newly-appointed Missouri Baptist Convention president, Rev. Jon Nelson.

“God is working even when you don’t see Him,” reminded Nelson. “He has pushed you, graduates. He has stretched you; he has moved you. He has put you in positions to help you innovate and grow well beyond yourself. God is working well beyond what you can see.”

To end the evening, Dr. Alicia Noddings, Associate Dean of Education, was presented with the Distinguished Professor Award.
