Students must have a primary, content area major to pursue certification at the secondary (grades 9-12) level.

Undergraduate degree-seeking students must meet all assessment requirements for certification before degrees will be conferred for professional education programs, including the following: 1) passing the Professional Development Folio (semester prior to student teaching); 2) passing score on the required content assessment(s) for each area of certification for which recommendation is sought; and 3) achieving a passing composite score on the Missouri Educator Evaluation System (MEES) summative evaluation (completed during student teaching) for teacher candidates.

Applicable degrees: Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Professional Studies, Bachelor of Science

At the secondary level, certification is offered in Biology Education, Business Education, Chemistry Education, English, Marketing Education, Mathematics, Social Science, and Speech/Theatre.  Secondary certification in combination with middle school certification in the same content area is offered for Business Education, English/Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Science, and Speech Theatre. Add-on certification is also available for Driver Education (9-12).

Subject-specific course requirements for the following areas of secondary certification are included under their respective divisions: English (School of Humanities and Theology), Mathematics (School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics), Social Science (School of Social and Behavioral Sciences ), and Speech/Theatre (School of Performing Arts).
