Assistant Athletic Trainer - Missouri Baptist University

Supervisor: Associate Athletic Director Sports Medicine/Head Athletic Trainer
Employment Status: Full Time

The Assistant Athletic Trainer is a full-time sports medicine staff member who provides medical care for
the student-athletes in concurrence with the policies and regulations approved by the Board of Trustees
and the practices and procedures of the university administration. He/she contributes to the overall
health and vitality of the athletics department through strong collaboration with colleagues across
campus and through positive participation in departmental projects, tasks, and/or operations.

Essential Job Functions

Within the limits imposed by the university, the Assistant Athletic Trainer is responsible for and has
commensurate authority to accomplish the duties set forth below:

  1. Provide medical care for assigned student-athletes per the sports medicine standard operating
    procedures.
  2. Coordinate and implement injury prevention and rehabilitation programs for student-athletes
    with advice from the Head Athletic Trainer and/or physician if needed.
  3. Provide accommodation recommendations related to sport, for student-athletes with restrictions
    or limitations.
  4. Make return-to-play decisions for student-athletes with advice from a physician if needed.
  5. Maintains electronic medical records of all patient encounters in accordance with federal and
    state regulations.
  6. Communicate with Head Athletic Trainer, physician, and coaches on student-athlete injury
    status.
  7. Responsible for being present at practices and home events as deemed by the Head Athletic
    Trainer per risk level of the sport and availability of the athletic training staff.
  8. Responsible for being present for away games, if providing services for football, postseason
    coverage, or as assigned by Head Athletic Trainer.
  9. Assist visiting athletic teams with medical accommodations and services as needed.
  10. Assist the Head Athletic Trainer in supervising Federal Work-Study students and provide
    preceptor duties of Masters Athletic Training students if needed
  11. Responsible for organization and appearance of all Athletic Training facilities
  12. Assist Head Athletic Trainer with annual budget/inventory of all supplies needed to carry out
    athletic training duties.
  1. Assist with the administration of the MBU Department of Athletics Drug Policy and Testing
    Program
  2. Maintain Athletic Training Certification through Board of Certification (BOC) for the Athletic
    Trainer, Missouri licensure, and CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers & Health Care Providers
  3. Responsible for administrative and other duties as assigned by the Head Athletic Trainer
  4. Works with other Athletic Training staff to provide care to the entire student-athlete population.

  • The Assistant Athletic Trainer is directly accountable to the Head Athletic Trainer of the
    university for the proper interpretation and fulfillment of his/her function, his/her specific and
    general responsibilities and related authority, and his/her relationships.
  • The Assistant Athletic Trainer and other athletic trainers serves with the Head Athletic Trainer in
    the Athletic Department. He/she will maintain good cooperation with all areas of the university,
    especially head coaches, and will maintain those relationships necessary for the accomplishment
    of his/her function.

Performance Measurement Criteria

An annual performance review is to be conducted by the Associate Director of Athletics for Sports
Medicine. This review will include assessment of the degree to which annual duties have been
accomplished. An analysis of the strengths and weaknesses based on a review of the Job Description
and recent performance, along with personal and professional development will be included.

Qualifications

  • BOC Certified Athletic Trainer
  • Master’s degree from an accredited institution preferred but not required
  • Licensed, or eligible for licensure, by the state of Missouri Board of Registration for the Healing
    Arts
  • Certified in CPR/AED for Basic Life Support and/or Professional Rescuers & Health Care
    Providers
  • Must have availability to work early mornings, nights, weekends, and school breaks as assigned by
    Head Athletic Trainer.
  • Some travel may be required but is limited typically to football and post-season play

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Requirements

  • Knowledge of: University, department, sport, and organizational rules, policies, procedures, regulations and services/programs; rules governing conference and NAIA participation.
  • Skills in: interpersonal, written, and verbal communication; leading, developing, and motivating diverse groups of coaches, staff, and students; organization, problem solving, and both short- and long-term planning; use of Microsoft Office programs.
  • Ability to: lead, interact, and connect with a diverse group of faculty, coaches, staff, students, alumni, and other public constituents; analyze data as part of developing and implementing short and long-term plans, and in reviewing and revising (as needed) policies, procedures, and practices; be a self-starter and lead by example.

Requirements

The work performed by this position is of a general athletic trainer. It requires the ability to operate a
computer and communicate on the phone and in writing. Performing this work does require some
walking on campus, some extended periods of standing or sitting, and some instances of bending,
stooping, and carrying items up to 45 pounds.
