Vice President for Student Development and Dean of Students

Missouri Baptist University is an evangelical Christian, liberal arts institution and has as its purpose the offering of programs of study leading to professional certificates, undergraduate degrees and graduate degrees in an environment where academic excellence is emphasized and a Biblically based Christian perspective is maintained. The University’s main campus is located in West St. Louis County. 

POSITION SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the President of the University the Vice President for Student Development and Dean of Students provides executive level leadership and vision in the administration of a comprehensive range of services, policies and procedures related to student development programming and planning. The Vice President exemplifies leadership and vision that reflects an inspirational, unified, and healthy campus community that provides the catalyst for a successful student engagement culture. The position serves as a member of the President’s Cabinet. The Vice President for Student Development and Dean of Students contributes to an array of institution wide planning in a manner consistent with the mission, core values and vision of the University.  He/She must have the ability to work collaboratively and creatively to meet the needs of a diverse student body and facilitate a learning and living environment where all students have the opportunity to succeed. The Vice President is responsible for the planning and direction of all Missouri Baptist University programs in the areas of health and wellness, counseling services, international student services, judicial affairs, student disability services, public safety, resident life, student activities, student government, intramural sports and intercollegiate athletics.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND AUTHORITY

Provide leadership and oversight of a comprehensive integrated and innovative student development program including policy implementation, human resources and fiscal management.

Work collaboratively with faculty and staff University wide to develop and communicate a student development model consistent with the institutional mission and strategic plan.

Lead, manage and operate in a manner consistent with the University’s distinctively Christian mission and core values.

Promote positive student relations by maintaining effective lines of communication with student leaders and organizations.

Work with the Office of Academic Affairs to effectively integrate curricular and co-curricular initiatives.

Collaborate with other University departments to strengthen student retention and graduation rates.  

Promote residential living and campus life to attract more students to reside on campus.

Support and promote the University’s strategic enrollment plan.

Ensure that all programs and services in the Office of Student Development comply with relevant state and federal laws including Title IX and the Clery Act as well as University policies.

Regularly assess all student development departments and implement strategies for greater effectiveness and improvement.

Employ new student development professionals as needed who are knowledgeable, experienced and passionate about working with students. 

Provide annual performance reviews of department employees.

Collaborate with the Office of Spiritual Life to facilitate chapel programming and support faith and service initiatives. 

Serve as liaison to the Board of Trustees Student Development Committee.

Counsel and advise students, adjudicate disciplinary cases and provide due process when appropriate.

Serve on the President’s Cabinet and Administrative Council as well as other University committees by appointment. 

Perform other duties assigned by the President.

RELATIONSHIPS

The President- 

The Vice President for Student Development and Dean of Students is directly accountable to the President of the University for the interpretation and fulfillment of the specific and general responsibilities of the position.

 Vice President for Business Affairs-

The Vice President for Student Development and Dean of Students will work collaboratively with the Vice President for Business Affairs in connection with the supervision of the University’s food service and in matters related to repair and maintenance of the residence halls.

PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENT REQUIREMENTS

An annual performance review is conducted by the President.  This review will include an assessment of the degree to which annual objectives have been accomplished, an analysis of the Vice President for Student Development’s strengths and weaknesses based on review of the job description and recent performance, and his/her proposed personal and professional development.

REQUIREMENTS

A testimony of personal faith in Jesus Christ and conduct openly acknowledging Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior as well as a commitment to perform duties consistent with and not contrary to the Baptist Faith and Message 2000.

Active participation in a local church, preferably affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention.

An earned master’s degree, preferably in student development or in a relevant field of higher education. Candidates may be considered based on other qualifications and senior level leadership experience.

Minimum of five years leadership experience in higher education. 

Ability to develop and implement innovative programs at a comprehensive university.

Strong leadership, supervisory and organizational skills.

Proven record of developing and mentoring employees.

Project management skills with the ability to effectively balance many tasks simultaneously.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as exceptional relationship building skills.
