MBU Theatre Presents “Little Shop of Horrors”
Missouri Baptist University’s theatre department is bringing “Little Shop of Horrors” to the stage at the end of the month.
The second show in MBU Theatre’s 2018-2019 season, “Little Shop of Horrors” tells the story of meek floral assistant, Seymour Krelborn, who stumbles across a new breed of plant he names “Audrey II” after his coworker crush. The R&B-singing carnivore promises fame and fortune to the down-and-out Seymour as long as he keeps feeding it blood.
Performances run from Sept. 27-30 on the stage of the Pillsbury Chapel & Dale Williams Fine Arts Center. The musical begins at 7:30 p.m. from Thursday through Saturday and at 2 p.m. for the Sunday matinee.
Kasey Cox, Director of Theatre and Assistant Professor of Theatre at MBU and the director of the musical, said she chose this musical, “first and foremost, because I knew it would stretch our students in the right ways. I also really love the music and the story. Seymour is one of my favorite characters in musical theatre. The story of how he will sacrifice everything because of his love for Audrey is beautiful.”
Just four weeks after the semester began, MBU Theatre is preparing to open their second show. Cox said, “It has been challenging to move so quickly from one show to the next so early in the school year. The students are handling it like pros, though.”
“The show is fun and upbeat, with a great soundtrack and fun, zany characters,” said Cox. “It has been a favorite of mine for a long time, and I couldn’t have a better group of students to direct.”
The rock musical by composer Alan Menken and writer Howard Ashman is based on Roger Corman’s 1960 comedy film “The Little Shop of Horrors” with screenplay by Charles Griffith.
“Little Shop of Horrors” uses music and humor to gently warn of the dangers of sacrificing morals for material gain.
