Director of University Communications

I.          Basic Function

Reporting to the Vice President of Enrollment, Marketing and University Communications, the Director of University Communications will act as the University’s chief storyteller. The Director will be responsible for creating and executing an integrated communications and marketing strategy aimed at advancing the University’s influence in the region while also contributing to enrollment growth. 

II.         Responsibilities

The Director plays a critical role in the development and execution of the University’s integrated brand strategy. This individual is a strategic, innovative, positive, hands-on, collaborative and effective brand communicator. The Director leads a small team of communicators and coordinates the University’s relationships with digital and content ad agencies and freelancers. He/She will be able to think both strategically and tactically to influence the University’s brand position, leading creative development from the brainstorming process through production. In addition, the Director will work to align all digital and content marketing efforts with the University’s strategic enrollment management plan. The Director will oversee strategy, maintenance and development of all content and digital marketing and communications platforms, including but not limited to: websites, MBU Magazine, social media and digital advertising. The role also will collaborate with the Vice President for Enrollment, Marketing and University Communications on cross-platform advertising campaigns. The Director will support the Vice President in media and crisis communications.

III.        Relationships

  • He/she is directly accountable to the Vice President for Enrollment, Marketing and University Communications for the proper interpretation and fulfillment of his/her function, general responsibilities and related authority, and relationships.
  • It is essential that the Director be able to build substantive relationships with various University leaders, including those who work in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, the Office of Online and Graduate Enrollment Services and academic leaders. 
  • Inspire and guide University Communications team to achieve goals outlined in the integrated communication plan. 

IV.       Performance Measurement Criteria

An annual performance review is to be conducted by the Vice President for Enrollment, Marketing and University Communications. This review will include an assessment of the degree to which annual goals have been accomplished, an analysis of the Director’s strengths and weaknesses based on a review of the job description and recent performance, and proposed personal and professional development. 

V. Requirements 

Ideal Candidates will be a professing and committed Christian with an understanding and commitment to uphold the Southern Baptist Faith and Message within the context of an intentionally Christian liberal arts university. 


  • Earned Masters degree in communications, marketing or higher education. 
  • Four years professional experience in communications-related field


  • Earned Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing or related field 
  • Two years related professional experience 
  • Demonstrate proficiency with Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative suites
  • Demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills including proficiency with AP style. 
  • Demonstrate effective organizational and administrative skills 
  • Demonstrate leadership and initiative 
  • Ability to operate with flexibility in a high energy working environment 
  • Responsibly manage confidential information
