Resuming Second Saturday

December 12, 2007

“We have Second Saturday hoping that all international students get the chance to hang out and have fun with each other,” said Elizabeth Crusey, the director of international student services. “We really want to encourage students to take advantage of this and have great fellowship outside school.”

MBU International Student Services began sponsoring the Second Saturday in the fall of 2007. It is on the second Saturday of every month and aims to provide international students a chance to take a day trip to typical places in the St. Louis area. Transportation is free, but students need to bring money for meals.

The first Second Saturday of this semester was Oct. 13. The plan was to go to Clayton Crêperie for breakfast and then have a tour at the St. Louis Zoo. Global Foods Market was the last stop on the list if time permitted.

The second and third Second Saturday were scheduled to be tours at the St. Louis City Museum and the Science Center, respectively. “The Second Saturday of this month (December) is going to be cancelled,” said Crusey on Monday. “No one actually showed up in the earlier events, so we decided to resume it on Jan. 12, 2008, with a trip to the St. Louis Art Museum.”

“I’d like to go, but I have to save money for my tuition,” said MBU Junior Lydie Dianda. “Maybe it’s not a big deal for most students to pay several dollars for a meal; I really can’t afford spending additional money besides school.”

“We will figure out better ways to inform about the event next semester,” said Crusey. “Hopefully more students will become interested in it and really get motivated to go.”
