Dressing for the Winter Season

The cold weather has arrived, and along with it, new fashion trends. Coats, sweaters, boots and accessories all have new looks for this season.
“I have noticed a lot of layers. Girls wear layered tank tops and then, a stylish long sleeved V-top shirt over those tank tops,” said Elisabeth Smith, MBU senior.
Other clothing items going over tank tops are oversized sweaters, which are sometimes worn in place of a coat. Larger sized sweaters are also popular, since they provide more warmth and comfort. The entire sweater, however, is not usually oversized. Portions such as the collars, turtlenecks and sleeves are typically the larger parts.
Opposite of the oversized sweaters are long, fitted coats. The trench, retro or military styles are classic looks. Trench coats are mostly worn with casual outfits, and are especially seen with belts that tightly fit around the waist. Grays and blacks are the typical choice, but other colors such as purple and electric blue are being worn as well.
“I like the coats that have imitation fur on the hoods. I also like the business style coats in either black or charcoal; the ones that have the large buttons,” said Smith.
In addition to large buttons, large metallic buckles are popular as well. These buckles, however, show up on boots. This season’s boot styles range from short ankle boots to knee-high ones. Styles also include fur trim, laces, zippers and seams in contrasting colors.
The trendy footwear among celebrities has been Ugg boots. They also come in many different sizes and heights. A popular trend is to tuck jeans into Uggs, or wear them with tight-legged jeans or mini-skirts. Uggs are even popular among men who wear them with jeans for a more casual look.
“One of my favorite things to wear during the winter is Birkenstock clogs,” said Smith.
These Birkenstock clogs are another footwear alternative and are available in suede, non-leather or leather styles.
“I also like to wear flared, boot-leg-cut jeans that fit well with my black stiletto boots. I like to look professional but like feeling comfortable at the same time,” Smith said.
Some accessories to go along with all the different footwear, various sweater and coat styles include leather gloves, bangle bracelets and scarves.
All of these trends may get pricey for college students, but the same styles found in department stores are also available in places like Target and Payless.
