Healthy for the Holidays

With the holidays approaching, the issue of weight management is on the mind of many college students and adults. While it may be difficult to fight off the holiday pounds, there are things that can be done before the holidays to help prevent weight gain.
Making changes that are easier to follow through, such as eating fewer late night snacks, can help promote long-term success. “I think it's always important to eat in moderation. Just because we tend to associate the holidays with good food doesn't mean that we should gorge ourselves,” said MBU junior Rachel Todd.
Cutting back on soda is an effective way to eliminate unnecessary calories. Fast food is another trap to which many students find themselves succumbing. Although it may be inconvenient, packing a lunch is usually much healthier and a great way to save money for Christmas shopping.
Although it may be difficult to fit in between studying for finals and last-minute projects, exercise is a great way to manage weight before the holiday parties. It also helps eliminate stress, which can cause over-eating and lead to weight gain. “My advice would be to get some exercise during the break. Make snow angels, take a walk through the mall, or play some football with friends!” said Todd.
The holidays can lead to unwanted weight gain for many. But by being aware of the details beforehand, it can prevent unwanted holiday pounds and make the time off a relaxing experience.
