Chili Cook-off

November 15, 2007

By Eden Yang

In order to encourage the MBU 2007 homecoming spirit, Student Activities hosted the Chili Cook-off at the Perk on Saturday, Sept. 10.

There were seven people grouped in three categories who participated in this contest: two MBU alumni, two students, and three faculty or staff members. Judgers were from MBU faculty. A total prize of $100 was offered.

Around 3 p.m. on that day, a group of Student Activities’ staff and volunteers came to the Perk and started decorating. All tables were covered with golden or orange tablecloths, flowers, balloons and maple leaves, representing the harvest season.

One hour later, all seven participants brought over their pre-made chili to the Perk and set up electric cookers to keep the food warm. Meanwhile, the cafeteria provided other food, such as sandwiches, salad, chips, cookies, caramel apples and chili.

After everything was set, judges began to walk along each table to taste the chili and make their final decision. While the participants were excited to hear the final result, the workers at the Perk were busy filling cups of ice water because some of the chili was really hot. Tarah Snow, a student worker for Student Activities, announced the final result. The winners were for the alumni, student, and faculty or staff categories were Eric Schertz, Annie Smith and Sandra Moore, respectively.

After the announcement, a free chili supper was open to everyone in the hope of offering all alumni, students, faculty and staff a reunion. “I think the best part of the chili cook-off tonight is to see different people getting together, especially the alumni,” said Sarah Long, the president of student activities council. “It was a great night.”
