Reviving the Homecoming Spirit
November 1, 2007
By Lee Engelhardt
It’s that time again. Homecoming at MBU begins this Friday and Student Activities, headed by Lara Robey, has arranged a wide variety of activities for students to take part in and enjoy themselves.
Homecoming is set to run Nov. 2-11, and with more than 20 total events, at least one event occurs each day. The event schedule set up by Student Activities matches the diverse interests of the student body, including a formal dinner theatre, intramural sports, an open mic night, a tailgate party with a vehicle decorating contest, a new competition between majors called Major Mayhem and much more. There are a variety of prizes to go around, all of which have students very excited. "I am pumped," said Scott Huber. "This is my first year for homecoming at the university level. I like all the planning and all the events; they really know how to have fun."
This will be Robey's third Homecoming and a lot has changed in Student Activities since she started. "A lot of the events when I first came in here that were the more traditional events that they had done were starting to just die off and there wasn't a lot of excitement," said Robey. "Student Activities wasn't really doing a lot of their own unique activities, and so I think when we first came in here we just tried to brainstorm about what we could do to get students involved and excited."
Robey admits to the odd pitfalls, such as a camping trip attempted too close to the beginning of the semester last year. "We didn't have time to promote it, and we didn't have enough time to get people interested in it," she said. Overall, however, most events have been good and well-attended and Robey is proud of her work and the work of the students working in Student Activities. "We have 30 amazing students with great ideas, and we just keep compiling them," she explained.
Even with so many events, Robey has her favorites. "I'm really excited to see the Mr. and Miss MBU Spirit Contest," she said. "I think this is what Homecoming is going to be in the future. I think everyone will just be so excited."
Participants in this event will be competing in a number of different categories, including actual event scores, spirit scores from things like dressing up for all the special dress days, and donations of canned goods, toilet paper and coats which will be given to three different charities. The winners will receive $300, $50 gift cards for the Perk, Homecoming shirts and trophies.
