MBU Gets Footloose

November 1, 2007

By Whitney Shaw

In an attempt to uphold a longstanding, Southern Baptist tradition, MBU has never been a supporter of school dances. However, this year students are breaking with this tradition and organizing a dance for MBU that will take place Nov. 3.

Freshman Amanda Cone is one of the students in charge of getting the details of the dance together. Cone was home-schooled from elementary school through high school and never had a school dance. Her junior year of high school, she organized a prom for a home-school group and another small Christian school in her area.

“I decided that once I got to college I would try to plan another one if there was enough interest,” Cone said. Cone is not alone in this planning. She said she could not plan this without the help of Jessica Rodell and Kyle Wohlschlaeger.

The event has met many challenges along the way. “The biggest obstacle was planning everything and finding out that the RA’s and the students on leadership staff were not going to be allowed to come,” Cone said. Because of their positions as leaders in the school and because they represented MBU, they were not going to be allowed to go to the event. However, this changed.

“I went to Dr. Chambers, listened to his concerns, and did my best to answer them. I tried to be as mature as possible and I was able to tell him everything we had planned to keep this event as safe and fun as possible,” Cone said. Cone explained that the event would be alcohol-free and chaperoned.

“As a freshman, some people have trouble finding their place in new schools, but I enjoy planning things and leaving my mark on the school,” Cone said.

The dance will be held at Ballwin Golf Club starting at 9:30 p.m., following the MBU formal dinner. While this event is being organized by MBU students and is for MBU students, this is not a school-sponsored event and is completely independent of the week’s homecoming activities.
