The Fabulous Fox Theatre in St. Louis presented American jazz singer, Tony Bennett on Oct. 27. Throughout the course of the 90-minute concert, the 81-year-old artist sang such lyrics as “Some day when I’m awfully low/ I will feel a glow/ just thinking of you…” An audience of nearly 5,000 people filled the Fox Theatre to listen to Bennett’s performance.
The audience members performed standing ovations after Bennett sang popular songs such as “The Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” “For Once in My Life” and “I Left My Heart in San Francisco.” Antonia Bennett, Bennett’s daughter, also performed two songs in honor of her father. The last one, “You’re a Lucky Man,” received a standing ovation as well.
Stephanie Christmann, the Fox Theatre’s receptionist, said, “Being able to see shows frequently at the Fox is a great benefit. People of all ages, myself included, were able to enjoy the Tony Bennett performance.”
The Fabulous Fox opened in St. Louis in 1929 and has been a popular tour site for many years.
People of all ages are able to tour this St. Louis landmark every Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. for $5. Tours are also available Thursdays and Saturdays at 10:30 a.m. for $8 and include a performance by Stan Kann, the former house organist for the Fox Theatre.
Christmann said: “We get a lot of schools, and camps will come during the summer. It is a neat experience because people are able to go backstage and experience what it’s like to be a Broadway star.”
These tours also provide an opportunity for the audience to see the stage from Bennett’s perspective, as well as that of other performers. Christmann said, “The tours are an excellent way for people to see what it looks like from the stage.”
The Fox brings entertainment to St. Louis in many different ways. Some performances include Broadway productions, country superstars, and pop, rock and jazz artists. Coming attractions to the Fox include “The Drowsy Chaperon,” “Annie,” “Wicked” and “A Christmas Carol.”
“The Fox is such a great attraction because there’s such a wide variety of shows. There’s something for everyone to enjoy,” said Christmann.
