Church on Sunday—Something New?
September 27, 2007
By Beth Kinsey
Typically when Evangelical churches around the country decide to add an additional service, they choose to establish a new service on Saturday nights or to establish a service at a different time on Sunday mornings. However, this was not the case for Liberty Christian Church located in O’Fallon, Mo.
Sunday, Sept. 9, 2007, marked a new step for Liberty Christian Church as they held their first Sunday service since their formation in May 1995. Due to the small number of members when the church was first established and to the lack of a building in which to meet, members chose to rent out other church buildings and meet on Saturday nights (so as not to interfere with the morning services of the church Liberty members were renting). Even after the congregation bought their own building in January 2002, they chose to continue to hold services on Saturday nights.
According to David Volz, associate pastor, the leadership at Liberty felt the need to launch a service on Sunday mornings as a better means of reaching the community. In the past this was not an option; however, now that Liberty has a building of its own, the desire to hold a Sunday service can be carried out.
“Most people in our society are used to going to church on Sunday mornings so we wanted to facilitate that need,” said Volz.
John Pistello, an MBU student, has been attending Liberty for the past several months. When asked how he feels about the new service, he answered: “The new Sunday service definitely has an ‘outreach’ feel to it. The atmosphere is very warm and welcoming. Though the Saturday night service has its benefits, adding a Sunday service provides another option for those who have other engagements. Saturdays are typically days where family and friends get together, so having a Sunday service is great.”
