Still a Blazing Memory

September 13, 2007

By Cara Newby

One mention of 9/11, and Americans are painfully reminded of a particular event. The exact date was September 11, 2001, and it was a devastating day for the United States of America. Thousands of lives were lost as an entire nation was thrown into confusion and sorrow. For a few hours the entire world watched as terrorists attacked their unsuspecting target.

When asked, most Americans can remember exactly where they were and what they were doing as they watched the Twin Towers in New York City crumble to the ground. U.S. citizens experienced a range of emotions from fear to anger. The victims’ families and friends had to deal with the sorrow and hurt of losing a loved one prematurely.

Students, as well, were solemn as they watched their nation’s history develop before their eyes. Travis Jackson, a senior at MBU, said, “I prayed a little bit that God would take vengeance. I was shocked and angry.”

Now, six years later, September 11 is still commemorated. Americans refuse to forget the terrorist events by holding memorial services to honor those who lost their lives. Others find different ways to remember September 11. Jackson said, “I usually look at some of my books about 9/11 and watch stuff on television about it.”

Although it has been six years since the attacks, feelings of uneasiness and doubt about protection from terrorism are not uncommon. Jackson said, “The main thing is wondering when it’s going to happen again.” Despite these feelings of uneasiness, people continue to find a way to rejoice in the strength and courage of their nation.

September 11, 2001 was a tragically memorable day for the U.S., but today, it is also celebrated as a day of hope when the nation unified to protect its citizens and joined the war against terrorism. The events of that day will not easily be forgotten. They will remain a blazing memory for those who choose to celebrate the anniversary of September 11 year after year.
