MBU baseball continued to show why it is at the top of the American Midwest Conference earlier this week.  MBU continued its hot hitting and won a double header scoring 28 total runs on the day over Williams Baptist 14-3 and 14-5.

Missouri Baptist (22-5, 16-0) remained undefeated in conference play after picking-up its first game of the day in the seventh inning. The Spartans carried a 3-2 lead into the seventh and final inning allowing Matt Marsh to come to the mound. Marsh threw a 1-2-3 seventh to record the save and secure the win after the game had been suspended for nearly a month.

In the second game of the day, the bats were alive from the first inning forward. The Spartans posted a 5-0 lead after two innings and never trailed in the game. Right fielder Ryan Gunhouse hit his third homerun of the season in the game. Gunhouse finished the game 3-4 at the plate with three runs scored and two RBI.

Catcher Garret Vail was also fantastic at the plate. Vail went 3-3 on the day with three RBI and a run scored. As a team, MBU hit .419 in the game.

In the final game of the day, the Spartans duplicated its run output and allowed five runs on eight hits. Missouri Baptist, on the other hand, recorded 18 hits in the game. Gunhouse also recorded another homerun along with Spartan third baseman Jo Jo Taylor.

The top of the Spartan order was extremely productive at the plate in Monday’s finale, the first four batters (Patrick Johnson, Pier Olivier-Dostaler, Taylor and Gunhouse) combined for 10 RBI. Johnson was especially impressive as he went 3-6 as the leadoff hitter. The team combined for a .450 batting mark in the game and hit .436 over the course of both full games.

The Spartans have now won 17 in a row and are a perfect 16-0 in conference play this season. Things may begin to get a little difficult, however, as the team will travel to Lyon on Friday to face the No. 25-ranked Scots. The Spartans are currently ranked 17 in the NAIA and may have an opportunity to distance itself from Lyon in the conference standings. The team from Arkansas is currently 15-1 in the AMC. Games are scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, April 5 in Batesville, Ark.
