RE: President’s Convocation: “Happier”
President’s Convocation: “Happier”
September 26, 2008
Dr. R Alton Lacey, Missouri Baptist University president, launched the 2008-2009 academic year Sept. 18 with a stirring charge to discover true happiness at the University’s annual President’s Convocation.
“A happy life is rarely shaped by some extraordinary events,” Dr. Lacey said to a packed Pillsbury Chapel. “Instead, it is shaped incrementally, experience by experience, moment by moment. It is shaped by balancing present enjoyment with meaningful work toward a future purpose.”
Using a letter Paul wrote to the Philippians in prison while awaiting a trial that could have likely ended in his death, Dr. Lacey emphasized that contentment can be achieved even during the most dire of circumstances.

Dr. R. Alton Lacey, MBU President, addresses the student body Sept. 18 at the University's annual President's Convocation.
Ultimately, Christ’s life is a model of happiness, he added, emphasizing that Christ lived daily in God’s presence while also finding contentment in relationships with others.
“You have the ability to decide whether the ultimate currency of your life is found in finite, material things or if the ultimate currency of your life is in meaning, purpose, calling and relationships,” Lacey added. “When we weigh the options, we can choose the happiness that comes when we shape our lives God’s way.”
