Trustees receive positive enrollment report, approve groundwork for first MBU doctoral program

August 28, 2008

Missouri Baptist University’s Board of Trustees received encouraging enrollment news, appointed several new faculty members and approved groundwork for the University’s first doctoral program at their regularly scheduled meeting Aug. 28.

According to estimated enrollment figures, enrollment at both the undergraduate and graduate level is expected to increase from last year, reported Terry Dale Cruse, MBU dean of enrollment services. Specifically, the University continues to see tremendous growth at the graduate level, which can, in part, be attributed to the University’s recently approved distance learning programs.

Undergraduate enrollment of new students at MBU's main campus is expected to rise about two percent from last year. As a result of the highest demand for residential living in recent years, all of MBU’s living facilities are currently at or near capacity.

Information from the official MBU enrollment report for the fall 2008 semester will be published Oct. 15.

The Board also unanimously approved the academic committee’s request to extend an invitation for a Higher Learning Commission (HLC) team visit in an effort to attain approval for a Doctor of Education degree. Given the vast successes of MBU's Master of Science in Education, the Master of Educational Administration and the Educational Specialist degree, the proposed Doctor of Education program, which incorporates an emphasis on leadership in teaching and learning, is a natural progression aimed at meeting the needs of educators in the St. Louis region. The HLC team visit is scheduled for Nov. 10 and 11.

In other business, the Board unanimously approved five new faculty members and a pair of resolutions of appreciation and received news of a major grant the University has secured.

Resolutions of Appreciation
The Board extended resolutions of appreciation to the 58 philanthropic members of the 2008 President’s Club, which is comprised of donors who have given the University at least $1,000 from Jan. 1 through July 31.

The board also extended a resolution of appreciation to trustee Darryl Rosser who recently donated a portable staging unit to MBU.

Mabee grant
Dr. Alton Lacey, MBU president, reported to the Board that MBU is the recipient of a $500,000 challenge grant from the J.E. and L.E. Mabee Foundation. The grant will be used toward the construction of the new Spartan Sports and Recreation Complex. In order to meet the grant’s challenge, MBU must raise the remaining $1.2 million needed to complete funding for the $7.5 million sports and recreation complex within one year.
