MBU’s Megan Hudson takes first place at Race for the Cure

July 16, 2008

A pink and white sea of more than 66,000 runners took their marks on Saturday, June 21 for the 10th annual Komen Race for the Cure in St. Louis.

With a single shot of a starting gun, St. Louis’ largest race of the year began.

Less than 19 minutes later, MBU sophomore Megan Hudson crossed the race’s finish line. Out of the thousands in attendance, Hudson, a MBU cross country and track runner, finished the race first among females. She completed the 3.2 mile race in just 18 minutes and 24 seconds.

“I was very, very excited when I found out that I was winning because I’m a very competitive person,” Hudson said. “Usually I don’t like to race and place second or third or whatever. If I get second, I don’t think of it as getting second place I just think of it as being the first loser.”

This race was more than a competition, though.

“This race wasn’t great just because I won. It was just an emotional experience to see all of these people who care about breast cancer. Everyone there probably knows someone who has had breast cancer and it felt great to support them.”

The 5K event raised $3.3 million for breast cancer screening, treatment, education and research for the St. Louis community, making it the largest dollar amount raised in the history of the race.

Hudson ran the race for Sandy, a breast cancer survivor who she has been friends with for years.

“(Sandy) is a fun, a very outgoing person. I didn’t even know that she had breast cancer for the first year that I knew her. When I found out I just thought ‘wow, she’s awesome’.”

Sandy learned of her friend’s first-place finish when she saw footage of Hudson crossing the finish line on the evening news.

“The race for the cure is for people like Sandy and for all of the people who didn’t survive. Winning didn’t just make me happy. It made other people happy too.”

Hudson’s successful finish this year is likely only to be the beginning of her involvement with the annual event. After all, the race’s goal of raising awareness and funds for something so important is something Hudson is proud to be a part of—no matter what place she finishes.

Hudson added: “I’ll definitely do this race as many years as I possibly can until I’m old and can’t even run anymore. I want to do it every year.”
