Stage set for unprecedented 2008-2009 MBU theatre season

March 18, 2008

Upcoming lineup includes New York City showcase, mystery dinner theatre

MBU Theatre is set to take their show to the Big Apple—accentuating a recently announced 2008-2009 season aimed at bolstering theatre at this university to new heights.

“The upcoming season interweaves a diverse set of theatrical and musical works to create a lineup that will challenge our student actors and provide the MBU audience with top-notch theatrical entertainment,” said Joy Powell, director of Drama Productions and instructor of Theatre Arts. “This is sure to be an unforgettable season.”

Actors selected for the first-ever MBU performance showcase in New York City will debut their spring theatre production at MBU April 2-5, 2009 before performing the work in front of New York’s theatre community in late May.

The showcase highlights an upcoming season that is as diverse as it will be challenging.

The season is also set to produce its first mystery dinner theatre, which will provide audience members with both a complete evening of entertainment and an opportunity to determine the play’s ending.

The acclaimed Broadway musical “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” will debut on the MBU stage for the season’s flagship production, which will coincide with Homecoming 2008. In addition, the season will include MBU’s fourth student-directed production, “Taffetas: A Musical Journey through the 50’s.” The four-women musical pays tribute to a host of 1950’s hits.

Following is a complete lineup for the 2008-2009 season:

“Taffetas: A Musical Journey through the 50’s”
by Rick Lewis
September 4-7, 2008

Join the four singing sisters from Muncie, Indiana as they make their national TV singing debut on "Spotlight on Music." This fictitious weekly 1950’s television show, featuring sisters Kaye, Peggy, Cheryl and Donna Taffeta, on real-life Dumont Television Network sets the framework for an evening of some of the greatest hits from this decade. Join us as we pay tribute to the girl groups of the 1950’s with such hits as “Mr. Sandman,” “Where the Boys Are,” “Johnny Angel” and “Fly Me to the Moon.” This will mark MBU’s fourth student-directed production.

“Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”

by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice
November 6-9, 2008

The Biblical saga of Joseph and his coat of many colors comes to vibrant life in this delightful musical parable. Joseph is a boy blessed with prophetic dreams. He is also his father's favorite son. When he is sold into slavery by his jealous brothers and taken to Egypt, Joseph endures a series of adventures in which his spirit and humanity are continually challenged. When news of Joseph's gift to interpret dreams reaches the Pharaoh, he is well on his way to becoming second in command. Set to an engaging array of musical styles—from country western and calypso to bubble-gum pop and rock 'n' roll—this Old Testament tale emerges both timely and timeless. This musical theatre extravaganza includes such standards as “Close Every Door,” “Canaan Days” and “Go-Go-Go Joseph!”

“Clue: A Musical Comedy”
