University family champions environmentally friendly initiatives
A crowd of students, faculty and staff gathered inside MBU’s coffeehouse March 17 to launch a campus-wide recycling initiative.

Dr. Lacey shares specifics March 17 about MBU's recycling initiative to faculty, staff and students.
The rally, aimed at formalizing an already widely practiced routine at MBU, is one of a host of strides the University has taken in recent months to contribute to the preservation of our environment.
“Formalizing our recycling practices is a necessary step as we continue to attempt to be good stewards of the environment in which we live,” said Dr. R. Alton Lacey, MBU president. “As a campus family, we have an opportunity to contribute to the sustainability of our society.”
MBU formed an Environmental Stewardship Committee, comprised of a cross-section of faculty, staff and students, in 2001 as a way to begin deliberate efforts to help our environment. At the rally, nearly 100 blue recycling bins were distributed to faculty, staff and resident students. A wide array of paper products, including magazines and papers bound by staples, are applicable for the recycling program.
Large recycling bins have also been placed adjacent to the University’s copy stations, in its mailroom and in various places throughout the Jung-Kellogg Library. In addition, industrial size recycling bins are now located outside of most MBU buildings.
In another effort to reduce non-recyclable paper, the University’s cafeteria has forgone its longstanding practice of using paper plates and plastic cutlery. In March, the café began serving meals exclusively on ceramic plates—complete with silverware and glasses. Under most paper recycle programs, products tainted with food are not applicable. In addition, The Perk, MBU's coffeehouse, has begun offering a 10 percent discount off of hot drinks for patrons who bring their own mug.
MBU also offers a free share-ride shuttle service at its West St. Louis County campus, which has contributed to a significant reduction in traffic from the residential area to central campus.
