RE: U2 meets Elizabethan—A MBU adaptation of Romeo and Juliet
U2 meets Elizabethan—A MBU adaptation of Romeo and Juliet
March 7, 2008
A contemporary take on William Shakespeare’s most famed tale of romance and tragedy is set to come to life on the Missouri Baptist University stage this spring.
MBU’s spring play, Romeo and Juliet, is set for April 3-6.
“The ultimate goal is to relate the fact that this story can be told in any time period to any generation,” said Joy Powell, MBU director of drama productions. “The real life themes of passion and depth surrounding this tragedy are universal.”
The modern adaptation will blend a myriad of medieval, Elizabethan and contemporary costuming, in addition to adapted language and music. The production will feature music from European rock band U2.
In addition, the Pillsbury stage will be converted into an intimate black box theatre during the show’s four-day run, providing audience members a unique opportunity to become fully immersed in the production’s organic version. An estimated 120 tickets will be available for each performance.
The cast list includes a diverse slate of community and student actors—including MBU’s president, Dr. Alton Lacey, who is set to portray Prince Escalus.
About Romeo and Juliet: The Montagues and the Capulets families have been feuding with each other for years. Young Romeo Montague goes out with his friends to make trouble at a party the Capulets are hosting, but while there he spies the Capulet's daughter Juliet and falls hopelessly in love with her. She returns his affections, but they both know that their families will never allow them to follow their hearts.
