RE: In Recap: MBU Welcome Weekend 2007
In Recap: MBU Welcome Weekend 2007
August 20, 2007
Michael Hodges kicked off his college career at Missouri Baptist University Aug. 18 by scrubbing car seats and strollers at a residential shelter for pregnant women who are homeless.
Along with dozens of his new classmates, Hodges, a freshman from Hazelwood, Mo., volunteered at Haven of Grace, located in North St. Louis City. Haven of Grace was one of three sites around the St. Louis region where more than 300 MBU students volunteered time and energy in conjunction with this year’s Welcome Weekend events.
MBU students also volunteered at a carnival for children at Compton Heights Baptist Church in downtown St. Louis and at the Missouri Baptist Children’s Home in Bridgeton, Mo. The community service project was one of a host of Welcome Weekend activities aimed at acclimating students to life at MBU. Students also participated in, among other things, a MBU Street Fair, an open-mic night, cosmic bowling and the annual President’s Ice Cream Social.
An estimated record-breaking number of students returned to class Monday morning to find a host of additions at MBU. Among other things, MBU has implemented the following changes:
* Classes began for the following new academic majors: Biotechnology, Speech/Theatre, Worship Arts and Musical Theatre. Musical Theatre builds upon the drama minor and the Worship Arts program compliments the existing Music program. In addition, MBU has begun offering a minor in Entrepreneurship under the University’s division of business.
* The Perk, MBU’s new 2,500-sq.foot coffee house / student center, is open for business.
* The Jung-Kellogg Library has undergone an extensive renovation. The $785,000 overhaul project included the addition of a mezzanine; complete replacement of furnishing, flooring and lighting; online hubs at every study table; renovated and expanded service facilities; a centrally-located reference kiosk and better organized layout.
* Brad Andrews has been appointed MBU Worship Arts coordinator.
Previously, Brad worked as the Worship Arts Pastor at Grace Church in Saint Louis. At Grace—one of the largest churches in Saint Louis with more than 3,500 people in attendance every weekend—Andrews acted as the primary worship leader, oversaw a staff of twelve ministry professionals and served as creative director.
