Former MBU student, humanitarian dies in Kenya

July 9, 2007

A former Missouri Baptist University student who rallied thousands of St. Louis residents to help people living a world away has died.

John Kihumba, a computer science major who attended MBU in 2001 and 2002, was killed in a car accident in Nairobi, Kenya on July 4. Mr. Kihumba was 42.

In 2001, Mr. Kihumba, a native of Kenya, led an initiative in St. Louis to provide new and used shoes for people living in his home country. The project, which generated widespread media attention and a heightened awareness of the plight of impoverished Kenyans, yielded more than 30,000 pair of shoes—more than twice the goal. The shoes were delivered to both children and adults in orphanages and hospitals.

At the time of his death, Mr. Kihumba was running for a seat in the Kenyan Parliament.

To find out how you can carry on Mr. Kihumba’s legacy, go to eagleministries.org. For more information about Mr. Kihumba’s life and his untiring mission to make a difference in Kenya, read the upcoming edition of the MBU Magazine.
