Coffeehouse opens for business

April 26, 2007

The Perk is open.

With a crowd of anxious patrons waiting outside, MBU’s authentic coffeehouse opened its doors for business for the first time Friday, April 20.

MBU students check out the menu of The Perk, MBU's new coffeehouse, on its opening day, April 20.

“In the short time that it has been open, The Perk is already becoming a gathering place for study and fellowship for a growing MBU student body,” said Dr. Andy Chambers, vice president for student development. “It’s a place to build friendships and community.”

The Perk is open seven days a week from 7:30 a.m. to midnight during the fall and spring semesters. The trendy, 3000-sq.-foot structure features, among other things, a working fireplace, a flat screen television, an outdoor patio and high-speed wireless Internet connection. The building, flanked with stained concrete floors and comfortable furniture, seats about 100 people.

The University has entered into a partnership with Kaldi’s Coffee Roasting Company, a St. Louis-based business that offers more than thirty hand-roasted coffee blends, to provide a full line of coffees, smoothies, espressos and gourmet drinks. The coffeehouse will also serve bagels and pastries.

The Perk was named after a campus-wide name solicitation last spring. For more than a decade, MBU has hosted a coffeehouse event, dubbed The Perk, which showcases student's music, poetry and other art forms.
