SIFE@MBU clinches regional championship, eyes nationals
April 4, 2007
For the fourth time in as many years, Missouri Baptist University took home top honors at the Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) Regional Competition.

SIFE@MBU, a team of an international non-profit organization that mobilizes university students to create economic opportunity for others, presented their outreach programs March 30 to a panel of corporate leaders and entrepreneurs who rated the overall effectiveness of each team's efforts. MBU competed against SIFE teams from 22 other institutions at the event, which was held in Rogers, Ark.
“As new challenges and opportunities continue to arise with increased visibility, SIFE@MBU has again exceeded expectations,” said Brenda Bradford, chair of MBU’s Business Division and a Sam M. Walton Free Enterprise Fellow. “The members of this year’s team are not only extremely innovative, but they are also steadfast in their determination.”
This year’s victory marks the fifth regional championship SIFE@MBU has won during the eight years the team has been in existence. The first-place finish won SIFE@MBU a chance to compete in the 2007 SIFE USA National Exposition. That competition, which is expected to draw more than 160 universities from around the country, is set for May 6-8 in Dallas.
Among other aspects of the regional competition, SIFE@MBU has impacted its community within the following five educational categories: market economics, success skills, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and business ethics.
Throughout the year, SIFE@MBU has specifically accomplished, among other things, the following entrepreneurial tasks.
• Financial Fitness: SIFE@MBU presented a workshop called “Financial Fitness” to freshman at MBU in Collegiate Seminar aimed at enhancing the personal success skills. Collegiate Seminar is a one-credit mandatory course for freshman aimed at preparing them to help students take essential steps towards choosing an academic discipline in response to a global perspective.
• Women’s and Minority Entrepreneurship Seminar: SIFE@MBU received a donation to fund the second annual Women’s Entrepreneurship Seminar in St. Louis. The team partnered with the St. Louis Regional Entrepreneurship Educators and expanded the focus of the seminar to include minorities.
• Stock Market at Ethel Hedgeman Lyle Academy: Through an innovative stock market game, members of SIFE@MBU guided students at E.H. Lyle through a four-week lesson in economics. The program focuses on the ins and outs of the stock market, responsible use of credit, savings and how to budget money.
• Fort Leonard Wood: MBU Trustee Trevor Reese, an employee at Edward Jones Corporation and the newest member of the SIFE@MBU Business Advisory, led the team at Fort Leonard Wood Army Base to present information on the importance of financial planning. Over 50 company commanders and platoon leaders were in attendance.
• Otis Spunkmeyer Cookies: Members of SIFE@MBU daily sold fresh-baked Otis Spunkmeyer cookies at the MBU Cookie Stop, located in the Bywaters Lounge.
