Following the record-attended production of Fiddler on the Roof and the sold-out performances of Some Enchanted Evening: The Songs of Rodgers & Hammerstein, MBU’s spring play is set to offer a poignant look at the lives of six soft-hearted Magnolias as they offer liberal doses of hairspray, free advice and gossip in the small town of Chinquapin, Louisiana. Over the course of two years, the play delves into the happiness and heartbreak associated with love, joy, pain, death and rebirth.
Steel Magnolias debuted in New York on March 22, 1987 as an off-Broadway musical. The play ran 1,126 performances and was nominated for an Outer Critics Circle Award. It achieved widespread acclaim and popularity when it was converted into a movie in 1989. The motion picture starred Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Shirley MacLaine, Daryl Hannah, Olympia Dukakis and Julia Roberts, who was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her performance.
