MBU to host Tax Breaks for Higher Education seminar

January 8, 2007

Do you want to know how to save money on the venture of attaining a college education? Understanding recent changes in tax laws may make your pursuit for a college education one of the smartest—and affordable—decisions of your life.

In an effort to help inform college-bound students and their families about the host of tax laws that can help cushion the cost of higher education, the Missouri Baptist University Business Division is hosting Tax Breaks for Higher Education seminar on Jan. 23 from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Representatives from Brentwood, Mo.-based firm Huber, Ring, Helm and Co., CPA’s , and William Felty, a CPA who is an Assistant Professor of Accounting at Missouri Baptist University, will be sharing key elements in saving money through tax codes with parents. Parents are encouraged to bring their college-bound students.

“Federal and state tax laws provide a multitude of ways for families to soften the financial impact of a college experience,” said Brenda Bradford, chair of MBU’s Business Division and associate professor of business. “By taking advantage of these little-known tax breaks, obtaining an affordable education doesn’t have to be out of reach.”

MBU’s Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE), a team of an international non-profit organization that mobilizes university students to create economic opportunity for others, will be also be assisting with the workshop. In addition, members of MBU’s Financial Services department will present information about the financial aid process.

Nationwide, the average annual cost for a four-year private education is $22,219, which indicates a 5.9 percent increase from last year. With public education increasing even more sharply, the annual, average cost for a four-year public institution is $5,836, an increase of nearly 6.3 percent from last year, according to CollegeBoard.com.
