MBU Women’s Volleyball Reaches Quarterfinals in National Championship

December 4, 2006

The Missouri Baptist University Women’s Volleyball Team concluded their 2006 season Dec. 1 after an impressive trip to the 27th annual National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics’ Volleyball Championship.

The Lady Spartans made it to the Elite Eight of this year’s National Championship, which was held in Columbia, Mo., before losing to top-seed and 2006 NAIA champions National American University.

“Our team worked all year together to create one of the most successful seasons in the history of MBU Women’s Volleyball,” said Head Coach John Yehling. “This team continues to grow in both skill and discipline.”

This year’s ending marked the second time in as many years that the MBU Women’s Volleyball Team had reached the NAIA Championship. Last year, the team reached the final four at the 26th Annual NAIA Volleyball National Championship in San Diego, Calif.

The team received an automatic berth to the National Tournament Nov. 18 after defeating Columbia College in the NAIA Region V Tournament.

The Lady Spartans finished the season with an overall record of 40-10. Sophomore Tracey Abell, senior Ana Mercado and senior Shannan Swiney earned first team All Region V honors. In addition to making the All Region team, Mercado was voted as the Region V Player of the Year and Abell was voted Libero of the Year.
