RE: MBU to offer baccalaureate and graduate courses at Lewis and Clark

MBU to offer baccalaureate and graduate courses at Lewis and Clark

October 20, 2006

Students of Lewis and Clark Community College soon will be able to complete a post-associate’s degree at their Godfrey, Ill. campus.

Beginning in Jan. 2007, Missouri Baptist University will offer six academic programs at L&C, leaders of both institutions announced today. In addition, MBU and L&C have entered into a two-plus-two articulation, which provides students the means to transfer general education coursework attained at Lewis and Clark to MBU while still graduating in a timely manner.

MBU will offer baccalaureate courses for the following degree programs at L&C: accounting, business management, human services, administration of justice and sport management. In addition, the partnership will offer graduate-level courses leading to a master’s in business administration.

“We are excited about the partnership with Lewis and Clark,” said Dr. Arlen Dykstra, provost and vice president academic affairs at MBU. “For years, students have asked us to offer programs in Illinois. We believe this partnership will allow students to continue their education in a convenient and affordable manner.”

Both institutions believe the partnership has the potential to greatly impact Eastern Illinois.

"We are pleased to be partnering with Missouri Baptist University, which will allow us to offer more options in higher education to the residents of our district," said Dr. Dale Chapman, president of L&C. "Missouri Baptist University is one of the fastest growing institutions in Missouri, and is well-respected for the quality of the degree programs which will be offered on our campus. This partnership will greatly benefit the residents of this region."

The partnership means Brighton, Ill. resident Jamie Harrop, a fulltime employee at Cornerstone Bank and Trust in Alton, will now have the opportunity to complete a bachelor’s degree in a manner conducive to her busy schedule. Like many other students, Harrop, who has received two associates degrees from L&C, wanted to further her education but didn’t want to travel to do it.

“Basically, I would have had to quit my job to be able to pursue my bachelor’s degree,” said Harrop, who plans to pursue MBU’s business administration degree. “This allows me to complete my degree while still working.”

FAQ:

Q: How do I know if my educational experience qualifies me for this opportunity?
A: In accordance with the two-plus-two articulation, all students who meet general MBU admissions requirements, as well as requirements for the A.A.S., A.S. or A.A. degrees at L&C, meet the minimum requirements needed to enter into the MBU programs.

Q: How many of my classes will transfer?
A: MBU representatives will work to ensure that all appropriate classes transfer. Typically, however, students may transfer 60 to 90 hours of credit depending on the major. This allows students to take a maximum number of hours at L&C and still complete a significant number of upper division courses at MBU.

Q: Will I be an MBU student or a Lewis and Clark student?
A: After participating students complete the requirements for an associate’s degree at L&C, you will become MBU students.

Q: What is a two-plus-two articulation?
A: A two-plus-two articulation agreement is a contract between a community or junior college and a four-year university. Typically, the student studies the first two years at the community or junior college, usually working toward an associate's degree, and completes junior and senior year studies at the four-year institution to complete requirements for a bachelor's degree.
