June 20, 2006
Joy Powell, instructor of theatre arts at MBU, has been cast in two shows this season at The Muny in Forest Park, the nation’s largest and oldest outdoor theater.

Joy Powell, MBU instructor of theatre arts
“The Muny has a rich tradition of producing theater at its best,” Powell said. “I hope to improve and hone my skills by learning from the incredibly talented actors who I’ll be working with. Ultimately, it is my goal to bring back the knowledge and skills that I learn to the classroom.”
Powell was chosen this past spring from hundreds of actors who auditioned at casting calls in St. Louis and New York. She will appear as a singer and dancer for the productions of AIDA and Oliver.
Elton John and Tim Rice’s AIDA, a timeless love story that entraps the would-be leader of ancient Egypt, the daughter of a pharaoh and an enslaved Nubian princess, debuts from June 26 through July 2. Oliver, a story of Oliver Twist’s journeys though the grimy backstreets of Dicken’s grimy Victorian London, will run from July 31 through Aug. 6.
Powell, a member of the Actor’s Equity Association, has appeared and directed numerous productions. Her performance credits include: Sonia in Godspell; Chiffon in Little Shop of Horrors; and Sister Mary Hubert in Nunsense I and II. Powell is a fulltime faculty member for MBU’s new Musical Theatre program, a fine arts program that will debut this fall.
