RE: SIFE@MBU Garners National Acclaim
SIFE@MBU Garners National Acclaim
June 1, 2006
For the first time in its young existence, SIFE@MBU received national recognition May 23 at the SIFE USA National Exposition in Kansas City.
SIFE@MBU, a team of an international non-profit organization that mobilizes university students to create economic opportunity for others, was named first runner up in the semi-final competition. The team presented their outreach programs to a panel of corporate leaders and entrepreneurs who rated the overall effectiveness of each team's efforts.
“The 2006 SIFE@MBU team was outstanding as they stood and delivered one of the most polished and personally engaging presentations that I’ve seen thus far by our school students,” said Professor Brenda Bradford, SIFE@MBU advisor and chairperson of MBU’s Business Division. “It was clear to me that after working together for three years, these students have developed a kind of rhythm that allows them to move as one when they stand before the people.”
SIFE@MBU, which began in 1999, received an impressive trophy and $1,000 for their success. In March, SIFE@MBU took home top honors at the SIFE Regional Competition in Chicago.
Throughout the year, SIFE@MBU accomplished, among other things, the following entrepreneurial tasks:
• SIFE@MBU students worked with EMED International, a start up company, to help them develop a marketing campaign targeted toward 18 to 30 year old consumers for an emergency medical I.D. card/ bracelet. The product contains data that is linked to an international data bank and accessible to emergency medical personel in case of an accident or a catastrophe.
• Through an innovative stock market game, members of SIFE@MBU guided students at the Barbara Jordan Elementary School in University City, Mo. through a four-week lesson in economics. The program focuses on the ins and outs of the stock market, responsible use of credit, savings and how to budget money.
• Members of SIFE@MBU daily sold fresh-baked Otis Spunkmeyer cookies at the MBU Cookie Stop, located in the Bywaters Lounge.
SIFE is a nonprofit organization that gives students the tools to learn the free enterprise system in a real working situation. SIFE challenges students on more than 1400 college campuses nationwide and 42 colleges in foreign countries to take what they're learning in the classroom and use their knowledge to better their communities.
