Smith Receives Distinguished Teaching Award
May 5, 2006
Credited as a contagiously passionate teacher, Dr. Larry Smith, professor of music at MBU, has been awarded the 2006 Missouri Baptist University Distinguished Teaching Award.
“It is our privilege to annually recognize a distinguished professor of the year from Missouri Baptist University,” said Dr. Alton Lacey, president of MBU. “"Dr. Smith was chosen by his academic peers for his passion for music and his untiring commitment to educating students."
The award is announced annually at MBU’s commencement exercises and includes a $1,000 stipend. The honor was created in 2003 in continuation of the longstanding Parkway Distinguished Professor Award.
The annual MBU Distinguished Teaching Award is designed to recognize an exemplary professor who demonstrates outstanding teaching ability, dedication, and enthusiasm. Effective teaching, innovation in course design and delivery, effective advising service to the institution’s community, and commitment to high standards of excellence were the criteria used by the University to select a recipient from among faculty members.
Smith directs MBU’s Chorale, Chamber Singers, and Choral Society. He also teaches courses in conducting, secondary music education, music theory, musicianship, choral literature, and choral techniques. He has sung professionally with the Oregon Bach Festival Chorus, the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra Chorus, and the Phoenix Bach Choir. He has served churches in Texas, Arizona, California, and Missouri and is currently the Minister of Music at Memorial Presbyterian Church in St. Louis.
Smith, who has taught at MBU since 1998, is a graduate of Baylor University and holds a Master of Music in Conducting from Texas State University – San Marcos and the Doctor of Musical Arts in Choral Music from Arizona State University.
