Allusion wins top honors at NYC Jazz Festival
May 2, 2006
Missouri Baptist University’s premiere vocal jazz group, Allusion, took home top honors at the NYC Vocal Jazz Festival April 23.
“This was an incredible opportunity for our students to immerse themselves in the wonders of jazz music,” said Director Pat Lacey. “From the venue to the instructors, the trip was filled with not only award winning music, but sure excitement about the roots of jazz music.”
Allusion, which was adjudicated by three top jazz musicians and educators, took first place in the Festival’s collegiate division, winning a featured appearance in the opening of the 2006 Festival Concert in the Allen Room of Jazz at Lincoln Center.
Allusion was formed in 1996 when Lacey, assistant professor of music and first lady at MBU, decided to develop an ensemble that concerted its efforts in vocal jazz, a music phenomenon that until recent years went largely untapped in the arena of higher education.
Overlooking Central Park and Columbus Circle this past April, Allusion, comprised of eight vocal musicians and an instrumental trio, sang their renditions of the old Mo-Town favorite “Get Ready” and the memorable “Georgia” for the sold-out venue.
Throughout the weekend, the group received personal advice from world-renowned musician Janis Siegal, a founding member of Manhattan Transfer, and notorious producer and musical arranger Roger Treece/
The following members of Allusion attended the trip: Jennifer Broombaugh, Robyn Diekamp, Tia Wright, Jordan Cox, Seth Carruthers, Kevin Leslie, Alex Smith, Leann Thompson, John Chambers, Brian Thompson, Carrie Dyer.
