Caffeinated Campus: Student Coffeehouse Planned For Fall
April 6, 2006
Coffee time.
Come fall, a full-service coffeehouse will adorn MBU’s west county campus, President Dr. Alton Lacey announced at the University’s convocation April 6.
“With the tremendous growth MBU has seen in recent years, a building like this has never been more needed on our campus,” Lacey said. “It will truly be a place for MBU students to enjoy.”
Construction for the 3,000-square foot brick building, which will be located adjacent to the Jung-Kellogg Library, is set to begin in early summer. The student coffeehouse will be named later this year after student input and should be open for business by next fall.
The University has entered into a partnership with Kaldi’s Coffee Roasting Company, a St. Louis-based business that offers more than thirty hand-roasted coffee blends, to provide a full line of coffees, smoothies, espressos and gourmet drinks. The coffeehouse will also serve bagels and pastries.
The trendy structure will feature, among other things, a working fireplace, flat screen televisions, a stage for regular performances, an outdoor patio and high-speed wireless Internet connection. The building will seat about 100 people.
The building’s interior is expected to take on an eclectic, vintage ambiance, featuring unique furniture, trendy artwork and an unfinished vaulted ceiling that exposes the structure’s wooden trusses.
“This will be a casual place where students can gather, but even more importantly, it will be place they can make their own,” said Keith Ross, vice president for institutional advancement. “Its our desire that the coffeehouse will help further strengthen the union of a growing MBU student body.
