RE: Chaplains unite at MBU

Chaplains unite at MBU

December 7, 2005

In the wake of the most devastating hurricane ever to make landfall in the United States, nearly 20 chaplains from local fire and police departments gathered at Missouri Baptist University to discuss the relationships between emergency personnel and chaplains in the time of crisis.

MBU’s Administration of Justice program, a growing major in the Social and Behavioral Sciences Division, sponsored the luncheon.

“The purpose was to identify and bring together public safety chaplains from the metropolitan area to discuss their role in a crisis,” said Frederick Crawford, MBU instructor and director of the Administration of Justice program.

“After the chaplains assembled they discussed their role and recognized the importance of having an organization that would supplement chaplain schedules in times of crisis. The theme was really, a chaplain is a chaplain is a chaplain, and regardless of assignment should be able to assist metropolitan agencies as requested.”

The roundtable meeting was the first of its kind for chaplains volunteering in fire and police districts in the bi-state area. Because of its success, MBU plans to host a regular series of similar events in the future.

“MBU will be the site of additional sessions,” said Frederick Crawford, MBU instructor and director of the Administration of Justice program. “It's important that this partnership be maintained and expanded. The role of chaplains can be a great influence to our Administration of Justice students.”
