RE: November Board of Trustees Meeting
November Board of Trustees Meeting
November 17, 2005
The Missouri Baptist University Board of Trustees, in a regular quarterly meeting, received reports on academic accreditations, reviewed tentative plans for charter school sponsorship and approved a textual change in the mission statement.
President Lacey reported the recent accreditation news including the NCATE and education specialists approvals as well as the sports management program. The president also presented the revised strategic plan document including a change in the mission statement.
The unanimously approved change slightly alters the final clause in the mission statement that stated “to providing educational services to the community.” The complete revised statement:
Missouri Baptist University is an evangelical Christian, liberal arts institution of higher learning and has as its purpose the offering of programs of study leading to professional certificates, undergraduate degrees and graduate degrees in an environment where academic excellence is emphasized and a Biblically based Christian perspective is maintained. The University is committed to enriching its students’ lives spiritually, intellectually, and professionally, and to preparing students to serve in a global and culturally diverse society.
Lacey invited Carl Petty to address the Board about a challenge to the board as part of a recent $1 million pledge he and his wife, Deloris, made toward the campaign for the sports and recreation complex.
The development committee presented the approved quarterly resolutions of appreciation including an additional resolution specifically in thanks to Carl and Deloris Petty for their $1 million pledge. Board Chair Bill Houk presented the resolution to Carl Petty during the session.
On the heels of numerous successful self-study and accreditation approvals, the academic affairs committee prefaced the upcoming 2007 comprehensive visit by the Higher Leaning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
The business and audit committee presented the findings of an annual independent audit by Humes & Bareington, who have been the University’s auditors for the past twenty years,
The board approved an amendment in the University’s 403(b) retirement plan to provide for online administration and setting the employee’s spouse as the default for beneficiaries. These were standard administrative changes initiated from a recent plan audit.
The board authorized the administration to study a possible four-year sponsorship of Ethel Hedgeman Lyle Academy, a charter school located in inner city St. Louis. No additional staff or administration costs would be involved in the charter school sponsorship. MBU student teachers would be able to participate in inner city educational experiences and the University would also be the first choice in accreditation and educational opportunities for their educators.
The board’s nominating committee offered a duplicate slate of officers and a singular change in the committee compositions with Bill Miller moving to the academic committee for 2006. The board approved the 2006 nominating committee as follows: Charles Cantrell (chair), Ed Plants, John Boudinot, Jean Jordan and Owen Taylor.
