MBU Receives $1 Million Pledge for Spartan Sports and Recreation Complex

November 3, 2005

Nov. 3, 2005 — Missouri Baptist University’s efforts to build a nearly 30,000 square-foot Spartan Sports and Recreation Complex received a major boost today with the announcement of a $1 million pledge for the fund-raising campaign.

Carl and Deloris Petty, members of Parkway Baptist Church, made the pledge that includes a challenge component. MBU President Alton Lacey announced the gift during the University’s annual Founder’s Day convocation.

“We express our deep appreciation to Carl and Deloris Petty and pledge to get the rest of the money needed to make this facility a reality,” said Dr. Lacey. “This lead pledge is a huge step in the process of making sure our athletic facilities amply serve our scholar athlete programs.”

The commitment gives the Petty family exclusive naming rights to the Complex’s gymnasium.

The University announced plans to erect The Spartan Sports and Recreation Complex in the fall of 2004. The $8 million facility will boast a gymnasium, fitness facility, training room, conference space, staff offices, new locker rooms, and a student lounge. The 30,000 square-foot complex will feature an expanded gymnasium with seating for 1,250 guests.

To honor past, present and future MBU athletes, the new structure will bridge the current Muncy Athletic Facility with the new complex, respecting MBU’s storied past in athletic excellence while evolving for an unprecedented future.
