MBU Hosts annual Historical Society Awards for 17th Consecutive Year

November 1, 2005

Continuing a longstanding tradition, Missouri Baptist University recently hosted the annual Awards Presentation of the Historical Society of St. Louis County during its weekly convocation.

“Awards have been presented to scholars, governmental officials and civic leaders,” said Dr. Arlen Dykstra, provost and vice president for academic affairs at MBU and president of the Historical Society. “Such recipients include former U.S. Congressmen Robert Young and the late Thomas Curtis; the late George “Buzz Westfall; and the Pulitzer prize winner, Dr. Mark Neely.”

The 2005 presentation, which was held Oct. 27 inside MBU’s Pillsbury Chapel and Dale Williams Fine Arts Center, marks the 17th year the event has been located on the MBU campus.

The following recipients were honored for their invaluable contributions relating to the history of St. Louis County:

  • KETC-Channel 9 was awarded the James McGuire O’Flynn Award for its dedication of informing and educating the citizens of the St. Louis area for over 50 years.

The award, named after the former president of the Regional Commerce and Growth Association and the Automobile Club of Missouri, is given to organizations or people who have served the greater interest of the St. Louis area.

Patrick Murphy, vice president of productions for KETC, received the award on behalf of KETC.

  • Sheila Harris, a retired art teacher from Trinity Catholic High School, was awarded the Edward J. Maguire Award for Distinguished Teaching.

The award, named after the past chairman of the Department of History at St. Louis University, is annually presented to teachers in St. Louis County who have demonstrated excellence in teaching in relation to the history of St. Louis County.

Harris, a 35-year veteran of high school instruction at Trinity and Rosary High School, has held fellowships and has studied art in Sweden, Italy and Greece. Her latest art show is entitled “The Doors of Carondelet.”

  • Eileen Harris, a distinguished St. Louis County author, was awarded The St. Louis Book Award.

The award is presented to authors who have made valuable contributions to preserve the history of St. Louis County.

Harris, a graduate of St. Louis University, has authored books on a wide range of subjects, including: The Official History of University City; The History of Shaw’s Garden; and The History of the Bohemians.

  • The late Richard Byrd of the Missouri House of Representatives and Judge Richard Teitelmann of the Missouri Supreme Court were awarded the Henry Sutton Award.

The award, named after the first Presiding Judge of St. Louis County, is given for excellence in government.

Rep. Byrd, a man admired and liked by members of both sides of the political aisle, worked to bridge differences and make Missouri a better place to live. Accepting the Award was his widow, Moira Byrd.

Teitelmann serves in a variety of roles in pursuit of equality and access to equal justice for all. He was appointed to the Missouri Supreme Court in 2002, making him the first legally blind and Jewish judge on the high court of Missouri.

  • Esley Hamilton, preservation historian for St. Louis County, was awarded the William Barnaby Faherty Award.

Since 1992, Mr. Hamilton has been Asst. Professor of Architecture at Washington University School of Architecture, and teaches Historic Preservation and Landscape Architecture. He is also the editor of the Architectural Historian.
