Day 3 - Dr. Joel Gregory
As the former leader of both the largest Southern Baptist church in America and the Baptist General Convention Texas, the keynote speaker at this year’s MBU Fall Lecture Series is sure to challenge and strengthen a growing MBU student population.
The widely-known Dr. Joel C. Gregory, currently a professor of preaching at Baylor University's George W. Truett, will speak each day at the University’s three-day lecture series, beginning Oct. 4 at 11 a.m. inside the Pillsbury Chapel and Dale Williams Fine Arts Center.
MBU has for years held a Fall Lecture Series during the month of October in a way to help bridge it’s quest for faith and learning. This year for the first time, however, the Fall Lecture Series will be recorded and made available as a Podcast on the MBU Web site.
Podcasting is a method of publishing audio programs via the Internet, enabling independent producers to create self-published programs.
Gregory is a Distinguished Fellow of Georgetown College and has pastored several churches, most notably First Baptist Church of Dallas—historically the largest church in the Southern Baptist Convention. While there, Gregory preached to President H.W. Bush and spoke at the Barcelona Olympics.
The author of several books, Gregory wrote the best-selling memoir of his life, Too Great a Temptation. The book has been produced as a play, God's Man in Texas, written by Baylor graduate David Rambo, and is one of the 10 most-performed plays in the United States over the last five years. Gregory also has written or edited several other books, including Growing Pains of the Soul, Homesick for God, James: Faith Works, and Gregory's Sermon Synopses.
Gregory earned his bachelor's degree summa cum laude in 1970 and his doctorate in 1983, both from Baylor. He received his master of divinity degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, where he taught preaching from 1982 to 85.
