Living Intentionally: MBU Family Donates to Victims of Hurricane Katrina following President’s Chapel
September 19, 2005
Following the distinguished remarks of President R. Alton Lacey about living a deliberate and intentional life, students and faculty generously donated hundreds of dollars to help assist victims of Hurricane Katrina at Missouri Baptist University’s annual President’s Chapel.
“Make the deliberate decision to go beyond what is required,” urged Lacey to the hundreds of students in attendance. “Life is full of choices and each one we make affects our future in some way. However, there are parts of your life which you can make choices now that will affect you for a lifetime. You can decide to be a peacemaker. You can decide to go beyond just being ordinary. You can be sincere in your desire to do right. You can cultivate discipline in your life. And you can learn to think for yourself. Every time that we do what Christ has shown us to do we make the world a little bit better.”
Lacey’s challenge to begin living an intentional life spurred a campus-wide offering to help the Gulf Coast region devastated by Hurricane Katrina. MBU students and employees donated more than $700 at the one-time collection—one of a myriad of ongoing efforts at MBU to help the victims of Katrina.
Also during the yearly chapel, MBU’s new faculty, dressed in scholarly regalia, lined the stage of the University’s Pillsbury Chapel, pledging to uphold the University’s fabric of faith and learning.
Lacey and Dr. Arlen Dykstra, provost and vice president for academic affairs, officially installed seven new faculty members during the service.
“Ladies and Gentlemen, you have been selected from many candidates as being well qualified to participate with our colleagues here assembled to join us in the mission of Christian higher education,” Dykstra said. “Since Missouri Baptist University has set as its mission to be distinctly Christian in its character and actions, you as faculty stand in a special position of privilege and responsibility.”
New members of the MBU faculty this year include: Dr. Ed Hillhouse, associate dean of graduate studies; Mr. Jim Chellew, Jefferson County North graduate site coordinator; Dr. Shelton Smith, site coordinator for the St. Clair region and professor of education; Angela Robbins, instructor of education and director of field experience; Dr. Bill Combs, professor of philosophy and interdisciplinary studies; Kristie Kimzey, instructor in English; Fred Crawford, instructor of administration of justice; Pamela, Goode, instructor in Human Services; Greg Farris, professor of health and sport sciences; Dr. Lydia Thebeau, professor of biology; and Dr. Emily Christensen.
