Missouri Baptist University conferred 506 degrees at the thirty-third commencement exercises, the largest graduating class and an increase of more than 100 over the previous year. Of that number, 191 received master’s degrees in education, the largest number conferred to date. Graduates, family, and friends gathered April 30, 2005 at Greensfelder Recreation Complex located in Queeny Park, St. Louis.
MBU President Dr. R. Alton Lacey, recently celebrating his tenth year of service at MBU, presided over the ceremony and delivered the keynote address. He has earned a degree in chemical engineering from Louisiana Tech University, a Master of Arts in Religious Education and a doctorate in psychology from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Dr. Lacey has also completed postgraduate work at the Harvard Institute for Educational Management. Academic Honors include membership in Omicron Delta Kappa and Omega Chi Epsilon. He is a frequent guest speaker, writer, and along with his wife, entertainer. In addition to his duties at MBU, Dr. Lacey is past Chair of the Board of Directors of the Association of Southern Baptist Colleges and Schools, and President of the Independent Colleges and Universities of Missouri. He currently serves on the Boards of the Rossman School and the United Way of St. Louis. He recently served as an advisor to the Governor’s Commission on the Future of Higher Education and has a current appointment to the Committee on Transfer and Articulation of the Department of Higher Education. As the University marked forty years of excellence in higher education, Lacey celebrated ten years as President in 2004.
MBU conferred 84 Bachelor of Arts degrees, 11 Bachelor of Professional Studies degrees, 139 Bachelor of Science degrees, 77 Bachelor of Science in Education degrees, 2 Bachelor of Music degrees, 1 Bachelor of Science in Nursing, 1 Associate of Science in Business Administration, 2 Writing Certificates in English, 2 Certificate of Business Administration, and 191 Master of Science in Education.
