Killebrew Receives Teaching Award
May 2, 2005
Mr. Ray Killebrew, instructor of communication, was presented the 2005 Missouri Baptist University Distinguished Teaching Award during the thirty-third commencement ceremonies held April 30, 2005.
The annual MBU Distinguished Teaching Award is designed to recognize an exemplary professor who demonstrates outstanding teaching ability, dedication, and enthusiasm. Effective teaching, innovation in course design and delivery, effective advising service to the institution’s community, and commitment to high standards of excellence were the criteria used by the University to select a recipient from among faculty members. This award was made possible in part by the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Foundation.
Killebrew joined MBU’s faculty in 1998 and serves in multiple capacities. In addition to instructing undergraduate courses in communication, Killebrew is also the faculty sponsor for “The Wave,” a weekly two-hour radio broadcast produced by MBU students in conjunction with the YMCA of West County. He is a member of MBU’s Admissions Review Committee, the University Technology Committee, and the MBU Film Club faculty sponsor. Killebrew has also been cast in several MBU drama productions, as well as feature films, commercial projects, and industrial-training film talent assignments throughout the country.
“Ray Killebrew is an example of MBU at its best,” said Arlen Dykstra, provost and vice president for academic affairs. “His outstanding accomplishments in corporate communications have allowed students to learn first hand about the rigors and expectations they will encounter after graduation. Fortunately, Ray Killebrew prepares them well. Perhaps just as importantly, Mr. Killebrew not only prepares them to make a living, but also how to live.”
Killebrew earned a B.A. in journalism and sociology from Washington University in 1956. After over twenty years at Maritz, Inc, Killebrew founded Killebrew-Prange Advertising, a regional marketing communications agency in which he served as president and CEO. Killebrew’s love for his art later led him to pursue an M.A in Media Communications, which he received from Webster University in 2000.
Killebrew is a chapter member of the St. Louis March of Dimes chapter, Media Communications Association of St. Louis, and the Baptist Communicators Association. He and his wife Helen live in Kirkwood, MO and attend the First Baptist Church of Kirkwood.
