RE: MBU Men’s Cross Country Head Coach Named AMC Coach of the Year
MBU Men’s Cross Country Head Coach Named AMC Coach of the Year
November 5, 2004
Joshua Buffington, Missouri Baptist University men’s cross country head coach, was named American Midwest Conference (AMC) Coach of the Year by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).
Coach Buffington, a native of Jefferson City, earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Hannibal-LaGrange College, and a Master of Science in Education from Missouri Baptist University. Buffington serves as women’s cross country head couch, varsity men’s basketball assistant coach and women’s golf head coach. In addition to his coaching positions, Buffington is professor of health and sport sciences.
"Coach Buffington has such a relaxed coaching style, which is quite impressive considering all the various areas in which he serves MBU,” said Tom Smith, MBU Director of Athletics. “This recognition is a reflection of the continuing bar of excellence we seek.”
The men’s cross country team has reached unprecedented heights in the 2004 season with a first place team finish in the AMC Conference. Five of the ten athletes selected to the 2004 All-Conference Cross Country Team are MBU runners, among whom is Denis-Bull Olinga, AMC cross country top finisher.
MBU has had several coaches honored this year for excellence in coaching. Buffington is one of five MBU head coaches to receive the AMC Coach of the Year award in the last year.
The purpose of the American Midwest Conference is to promote the positive ideals and objectives of athletics, to provide an organization of colleges and universities with similar foundations to engage in athletic contests on an equal basis, to serve as a forum to formulate and solve common problems, to enhance and preserve athletics in their true perspective and to promote athletics in an academic environment. The AMC is a member of the NAIA.
