MBU Hosts Welcome Weekend for Record Enrollment
August 26, 2004
This past weekend, Missouri Baptist University hosted all new students and their families to campus for Welcome Weekend, an annual three day event aimed at acclimating students to college life. Eager student volunteers met new residents curb-side on Friday, ready to unload jam packed cars and welcome students and parents. Events such as a street fair, family info sessions, and team building activities filled the day with information and excitement.
Full-time undergraduate enrollment at the main campus has reached a record 988, the largest in the history of MBU and up 9% from last year’s enrollment at this same time. With the addition of the Master of Business Administration and the Master of Arts in Christian Ministries, graduate enrollment is up 8%. Total enrollment is projected to reach well over 3700.
Following dinner, Scott Blanchard, 2003 MBU graduate gathered students and parents together for a final session and posed the question, “What are you doing here?”
“Baseball,” Blanchard declared, “is why I thought I came to MoBap. As it turned out, baseball is just what got me here; it wasn’t what I was here to do.” As the service ended, mothers and fathers poured down the aisles to the altar, kneeling in solemn petition to the Lord.
New students loaded buses early Saturday morning and headed for the Missouri Baptist Children’s Home. A sea of students, clad in red volunteer shirts, covered the MBCH property, lending helping hands wherever needed. New and returning students have been volunteering at MBCH during Welcome Weekend for the past four years, participating in projects as diverse as painting housing facilities to organizing donated goods. Deans, faculty, and staff members accompanied the group this year to demonstrate the servant leadership plays a vital to the college education at MBU.
