RE: MBU Head Basketball Coach AMC Coach of the Year
MBU Head Basketball Coach AMC Coach of the Year
March 25, 2004
Missouri Baptist University’s head basketball coach, Tony Tompkins, was named the 2003-2004 American Midwest Conference Coach of the Year.
Coach Tompkins, a native of Northern Illinois, is a 1998 graduate of Missouri Baptist University. Coach Tompkins spent one year as assistant coach for Rock Falls High School in Rock Falls, IL, where he led the team to an IA Illinois State Championship.
“Coach Tompkins in two short years has done an excellent job building the men’s basketball program to compete at the national level. When you look at the coaches in the AMC, it’s quite an honor to have Coach Tompkins selected for Coach of the Year. We are fortunate to have such an outstanding young coach here at MBU,” says Tom Smith, director of athletics.
Tompkins is entering his third season with the Spartans with a 49-15 overall record at MBU. He was selected as AMC Coach of the Year from a field of qualified coaches, including University of Illinios-Springfield head coach Kevin Gamble, formerly of the Boston Celtics.
Last season, the Spartans tied as co-champions of the American Midwest Conference and had four all conference selections. Jason Kaplan, Ashley Ukah, and Jed Johnson were selected first team all-conference. Ryan Edwards was selected honorable mention all-conference.
The Spartans finished their season with a 26-7 overall mark and ranked 16 in the final national polls. Their invitation to the NAIA National Basketball Championship in Kansas City was the first for the Spartans in ten years.
