RE: February Board of Trustees Meeting
February Board of Trustees Meeting
February 27, 2004
In a regularly scheduled quarterly meeting, the MBU board approved a record fiscal budget, recognized faculty reappointments and promotions, and participated in a campus dedication ceremony on February 26.
Dr. Lacey, University president, addressed the board and outlined key performance figures including a spring enrollment increase at 11.3 percent over 2003, and a 3 percent increase in fall to spring retention. Lacey also reported two institutional highlights: the receipt of an Associate Member accreditation standing with the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) and a feature in the December 2003 American Schools & University magazine of the Pillsbury Chapel and Dale Williams Fine Arts Center.
The business and audit committee presented their $20 million budget—noting a 15.3 percent increase over 2003/04—noting funds allocated for significant strategic advances. The current fiscal year is projected to be well ahead of budget—including the planned yearly surplus.
The board approved academic committee’s faculty reappointments and seven promotions, including: Dr. Cathy Benton to Associate Professor of Music; Dr. Andrew Chambers to Associate Professor of Bible; James French to Associate Professor of Education; Dr. John Han to Professor of English; Lowell Pitzer to Assistant Professor of Heath and Sport Sciences; Dr. Larry Smith to Professor of Music; and Dr. Mary Sue Thompson to Associate Professor of Accounting and Business Administration.
The trustees confirmed resolutions of appreciation to recognize President’s Club members and also approved a recommendation to award an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters to Joyce S. Pillsbury.
The board also participated in a campus dedication ceremony for the renovations to the Thomas and Virginia Field Academic Hall, including the cafeteria, computer labs, classrooms, academic and staff offices, and the student lounge.
