Deese Receives 2003 Governor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching
December 10, 2003
Governor Bob Holden recognized Missouri Baptist University Assistant Professor of Physical Science/Mathematics, Dr. Jerry Deese, and an additional sixty-eight outstanding faculty from Missouri’s postsecondary schools, colleges, and universities during the 2003 Governor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching on November 16.
Dr. Jerry Deese has been serving at Missouri Baptist University since 1993. He holds a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering (’72), an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering (’76), and a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering (’78) from North Carolina State University.
Published and presented in over forty publications and venues, Deese has been an expert voice on Euler/Navier-Strokes calculations and numerical methods in fluid mechanics. In his fifteen years at the McDonnell Douglas Research Laboratories, Deese researched developing numerical methods for solution of the nonlinear partial differential equations governing fluid flow.
A member of Phi Kappa Phi National Honorary Society and Sigma Xi Research Society, Deese was also honored as an Outstanding Aerospace Senior NC State University and an Alcoa Scholarship Recipient.
“Dr. Jerry Deese exemplifies the level of academic quality that we all wish to provide our students. He relates a complex subject matter while building a strong rapport with students that makes a distinct impact in their lives,” states Dr. Arlen Dykstra, university provost.
“The purpose of any particular course is to equip the student to achieve his maximum potential as a person, that is to fulfill the role or purpose for which God created him. The goal then is to help the student develop by presenting a Godly example, by imparting knowledge, by encouraging man’s innate curiosity about God and the universe he created, by offering encouragement and support and by providing a fair and honest assessment of progress toward that goal,” says Deese.
Effective teaching, innovation in course design and delivery, effective advising service to the institution’s community, and commitment to high standards of excellence were the criteria used by institutions to select a recipient from their campus.
During his address, Governor Holden praised faculty for the work that they do educating Missouri’s workforce. “An educated workforce is one of Missouri’s most powerful economic development tools and we would not have this without you,” Holden said.
