RE: EXCEL Celebrates Twentieth Anniversary

EXCEL Celebrates Twentieth Anniversary

October 14, 2003

Missouri Baptist University’s dual-enrollment partnership, EXCEL, celebrates twenty years of success, having served over 15,000 talented high school students across Missouri.

Since its inception in 1983, EXCEL has been helping students earn college credit through their high school or homeschool. Westminster Christian Academy was the first to join the program twenty years ago. Since then, EXCEL has expanded to 47 schools, most recently adding Louisiana High School, New Haven High School, and Ursuline Academy.

By integrating their college courses into their high school curriculum, students embark on their general education early, allowing them to concentrate on a major area of study. Some participants also have an opportunity to be better prepared for college, which may not have been provided otherwise.

School administrators, including principals and guidance counselors, have reported that students and their families have benefited from the EXCEL Program because it encourages students to take more challenging courses than they normally would. One high school principal said, “The EXCEL dual credit program has been a key factor in upgrading our curriculum 7-12 to better prepare students to meet the demands in post-secondary training.”

EXCEL will celebrate their anniversary at a banquet on November 7, recognizing administrators, coordinators, counselors, and teachers from its partner schools. Mary Ellen Fuquay, Director of EXCEL, stated, “The evening of recognition and awards will give our on-campus faculty and the high school partners a chance to share about their students and courses and themselves.”
