Uschold Named Region V Baseball Coach of the Year
August 20, 2003
This August, Missouri Baptist University Head Baseball Coach Eddie Uschold was awarded the 2003 American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Diamond Sports Company NAIA Region V Coach of the Year.
Coach Uschold was selected by his peer Region V coaches to what the Region refers to as a “most outstanding and deserving honor.” This year, Uschold also received AMC Coach of the Year and the men’s team earned three of four conference awards: Player of the Year, Pitcher of the Year, and Newcomer of the Year.
“It’s nice to receive an award like this because you know you have the respect of your peers. But you don’t get voted for this if you don’t have good players--and we did have good players and they played well. The award is a reflection on the program as much as it is a reflection on me,” states Uschold.
A regular season record of 40-4 and an 18-0 conference record led to Missouri Baptist’s second consecutive conference championship and first undefeated conference season in Spartan baseball history. Ranked second in the nation, the Spartans finished their fourth 40+ win in five years. Uschold’s four year record at MBU is 151-82.
“Coach Uschold is a great coach not only on the field, but also off the field. The team boasts the highest GPA of any MBU athletic program. His recognition reflects upon the continuing bar of excellence we seek,” says Director of Athletics Tom Smith.
Eight Spartan players were named First Team All-Conference; four, All-Region; four, All-American; 12, Academic All-Conference; and two, Academic All-Americans (National Scholar Athletes). Three players also signed professional contracts in 2003, joining the 12 signed previously under Uschold to teams like the Cubs, the Phillies, and the Tigers.
